One-time numbers vs rented numbers: which do you need?
Compare one-time activation numbers, rentals and voice-call numbers for SMS verification: how long they last, what they receive, refunds and when to choose each.

One-time numbers
Best for a single sign-up. You buy a number for one app, receive its code, and you are done. If no code arrives, cancel and the price is refunded. Many numbers can receive a second code later for a small extra price.
Rentals
Best when you need to keep receiving messages: logging in again later, two-factor codes, or several apps on one number. A rental lasts from one day up to several months and shows every SMS it receives.
A rental can be cancelled for a refund only within 20 minutes of purchase and only if no SMS has arrived yet. After that it is yours until it ends.
Voice-call numbers
Some apps verify by calling the number and reading out a code. A voice-call number handles that call for you and shows the code on your dashboard, just like an SMS.
Quick rule of thumb
- One account, one code: a one-time number.
- You will need to log in again or receive codes later: a rental.
- The app only offers a phone call: a voice-call number.
